Anthony’s Story
Long before he became one of America's most recognized economists, Anthony Chan was a kid growing up in the public housing projects of East Brooklyn.
Raised by his Puerto Rican mother, who cleaned office buildings, and his Chinese immigrant father, who worked as a waiter, Anthony learned early what financial uncertainty looked like. When his father passed away, he began working at just thirteen years old to help support his family. Like many children growing up around him, opportunity often felt out of reach.
Then, at the age of twelve, a Sunday television program changed the course of his life.
Watching future U.S. Treasury Secretary William Simon explain the economy sparked a curiosity that would become a lifelong passion. Anthony realized economics wasn't simply about charts or financial markets. It was about understanding the forces that shape people's lives, businesses, and futures. From that day forward, he set his sights on becoming an economist.
That ambition carried him from Brooklyn to Baruch College, where he earned a degree in Finance and Investments, before completing both his master's degree and Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Maryland. Along the way, he balanced graduate school with supporting a young family, building the work ethic, resilience, and discipline that would define his career.
Anthony's professional journey led him through academia, the Federal Reserve System, and Barclays before he joined JPMorgan Chase, where he spent the next twenty-five years as Chief Economist. During that time, he helped businesses and investors navigate some of the most consequential economic events of the past generation, including the dot-com crash, the September 11 attacks, the Global Financial Crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and historic shifts in inflation, interest rates, and monetary policy.
As one of the nation's leading economic voices, Anthony became a trusted advisor to executives, investors, policymakers, and organizations around the world. He served on several of the country's most respected economic forecasting panels, advised clients across virtually every major industry, and became a familiar face on CNBC, Bloomberg Television, Fox Business, CNN, and other leading news outlets, helping millions better understand the forces shaping the global economy.
Despite those accomplishments, Anthony has never lost sight of where he came from.
Growing up with limited resources taught him that economics is never just theory. It has real consequences for businesses, families, and communities. That perspective continues to shape his work today. Whether speaking to corporate executives, industry leaders, or entrepreneurs, Anthony believes the best economic insights do more than explain what is happening. They help people make smarter decisions about what comes next.
Today, Anthony continues to share that perspective through keynote presentations, executive briefings, media appearances, and strategic economic advisory work. His mission remains the same as it was when a twelve-year-old boy first discovered the field that would change his life: to make economics accessible, practical, and empowering for the leaders shaping tomorrow's economy.
